Honors and Awards
Min Hyung Choi, Ph.D. has been appointed as the new Professor and Department Chair of Computer Science in the School of Science and Engineering at Saint Louis University, effective Fall 2024. Previously, he was a Professor at the University of Colorado Denver, where he directed the Computer Graphics and VR Laboratory. His research activities span the fields of computer graphics, AI-driven computer vision, and virtual-augmented reality, with an emphasis on human augmentation, and he actively addresses real-world challenges in medical and industrial applications. He has spearheaded numerous collaborative projects aimed at the surgical simulation in VR, early detection of brain damage and cognitive impairments, fine motor learning in XR, and addressing sleep apnea and obstructed breathing in children. His work has been recognized with the NSF CAREER Award, the University of Colorado Denver Award for Excellence in Research, and four best paper awards at international conferences. Dr. Choi has authored over 100 papers, secured over $7.8 million in external research funding from agencies like NSF, NIH, DARPA, Comcast, and Microsoft, and holds 7 patents. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident in his startup, Strivision. Dr. Choi also played a significant leadership role as the founding director of the Comcast Media and Technology Center, fostering transdisciplinary collaboration in research and human development. In his new role at SLU, Dr. Choi will champion the continued growth of the Computer Science department, enhancing its excellence in teaching, research, and engagement with industry and the community.
Community Work and Service
Choi joined Saint Louis University in the fall of 2024 as a professor and chair of computer science. He has been a faculty member at the University of Colorado Denver for 25 years, serving the university as the director of the computer graphics and VR laboratory and the founding director of the Comcast Media and Technology Center.
